Are Golf Carts Street Legal in NC?

Are golf carts street legal in nc

What could be better than taking your cart down the street for some ice cream in the summer, or out on the road to go visit your neighbor down the street? Unfortunately, not all golf carts are street legal. You might have heard the term “street allowed,” which we’ll explain here. While it might sound like a good story to tell people later on, getting pulled over in a golf cart is far from a fun experience.

If you ever have any questions about your specific golf cart or want to make sure that the next cart you buy can be driven on the streets, feel free to call us at 919-552-9351 or contact us below to speak with a member of our team.

What Does Street Legal Mean?

When you hear the term “street legal,” you’re talking about carts that are required by law to meet the same requirements as other vehicles that are on the roadways. They must have mirrors, a horn, seatbelts, headlights, brake lights, four-wheel brakes, tires approved by the Department of Transportation, a VIN, and a license and registration. That’s a lot of extra gear! Street legal carts can operate on public roads, but never on highways or interstates. These carts will typically reach speeds of up to 25 miles per hour.

What Does Street Allowed Mean?

Street allowed carts are not allowed on public streets, but certain communities have petitioned to allow carts within certain municipalities, which means golf carts are welcome on the streets in places like Carolina Beach, Pinehurst, and Wrightsville Beach. Each community may have specific restrictions, so be sure to check in with the local government. Most communities that have exemptions have strict rules in place; for example, drivers of a street allowed cart may need a valid driver’s license. Most street allowed carts will not go faster than 15 miles per hour.

What Type of Cart Should I Get?

It all depends on how you want to use it! If you’re going to be taking your cart on public roads with speed limits of 35 miles per hour, then a street legal cart may be what you need. However, if you use your golf cart at one of the beaches or communities that welcomes street allowed carts, then you should be fine with a golf cart that doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of a street legal cart. Do you plan to use your cart in a combination of the two areas? Go with a street legal cart to keep yourself and passengers protected on the roadways.
