If you’re like most people, a golf cart is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of jump starting a car. But believe it or not, a golf cart can actually be used to jump start a car – under the right circumstances. While a golf cart has the ability to jump a car, it’s not always as easy as it sounds. You must make sure you have the right equipment and know how to use it before you try to jump start a car with a golf cart.
The experts here at J’s Golf Carts in Holly Springs, North Carolina are here to provide you with all of the information you need to prepare to jump a car with your golf cart. Keep reading to learn more.
Having the Proper Battery
For starters, golf carts usually have much smaller batteries than cars. This means that golf carts can’t jump start just any car. The golf cart battery must be powerful enough to jump start the car, and the car’s battery must be small enough to be jump started by the golf cart. So, essentially, you cannot jump start a large truck with a golf cart.
How big of a battery does your golf cart need to jump start a car? This is a common question – but it’s not as simple as it sounds. The golf cart battery must be powerful enough to jump start the car – but it’s not always as simple as that. The size of the golf cart battery will also play a role in how powerful it is. A smaller golf cart battery will not be as powerful as a larger golf cart battery. A gas golf cart often has a battery as powerful as a car’s; these are 12-volt batteries. However, a gas golf cart will use its battery’s charge much more quickly than an electric cart, so you need to make sure that the battery is charged.
So, while there is not one clear cut answer on how big your golf cart’s battery needs to be, it is important to be aware of how big your cart’s battery is compared to the car’s battery. If you have a 12 volt battery on your golf cart, you likely will be able to jump a small car with it. However, this is obviously not guaranteed.
Getting the Right Materials
What do you need to jump start a car with a golf cart? Believe it or not, you don’t need much. Just a golf cart, the car that needs to be jumped, and jumper cables. Of course, you’ll also need to make sure that the golf cart is parked close enough to the car so that the jumper cables will reach. You need to make sure that you have at least 12 volts of power on your golf cart’s batteries, or you will likely not be able to successfully jump the car.
If you have all of the necessary items, jump starting a car with a golf cart is actually fairly simple. Just follow the instructions in your golf cart’s manual.

- With the battery compartment open on your golf cart, make sure you disconnect however many batteries you need. You’ll want a total of 12 volts of power. A 12 volt battery is your best bet for jump starting a car.
- If you need to jump start your car using two 6 volt batteries, you will need to connect your batteries in a different manner.
- Connect the red jumper cable to the positive terminal of one of the batteries, and connect the opposite black jumper cable to the negative terminal of the second battery.
- If you are only using one battery to jump start your car, you will connect the red jumper cable to the positive terminals on the car and golf cart. The black jumper cable will connect to the negative terminals on the car and golf cart. Make sure the golf cart battery is not still connected to the other batteries in the cart.
- If you have a GAS powered golf cart, you can now turn the golf cart on. However, if you are using an ELECTRIC golf cart, you will not want to start the cart.
- Turn the car on and let the battery charge.
Now you should have a car that is up and running!
