Can a Golf Cart Battery Catch Fire?

Golf carts are a popular choice of transportation for golf courses, campgrounds, and other private areas. While golf carts are reliable and convenient, golf cart owners must remain aware of the potential dangers concerning golf cart battery safety. The potential of a golf cart battery catching fire is a legitimate hazard that golf cart owners and operators need to be aware of.  When a golf cart’s battery is not properly cared for, it is possible for it to catch fire.

While golf carts are designed with built-in safeguards to prevent fire hazards, users should practice proper golf cart maintenance and general safety precautions to prevent any issues.  To help mitigate this possibility and keep golf carts safe, it is important to practice proper battery maintenance and keep an eye out for any changes in temperature or strange smells coming from the golf cart’s battery compartment. We will be discussing the causes  of a golf cart battery fire next.

Why Would a Golf Cart Battery Catch Fire?

It is uncommon for a golf cart’s battery to catch fire, it is not impossible.  Usually a fire stems from lack of maintenance, overcharging, and electrical issues. Golf cart batteries use sulfuric acid and water to store electrical energy, which can produce hydrogen gas when it is being charged. If too much hydrogen gas accumulates, either due to a bad battery or incorrect charging procedure, it may spark and ignite a fire.  This is why it is important to not overcharge your cart.  Additionally, many people make the mistake of charging their cart’s batteries inside their garage, which can increase the chances of a fire occurring.

Furthermore, golf carts over time tend to accumulate dirt and debris on their surface as well as near the terminals of the on-board batteries. This can contain an electrical discharge that may also result in a golf cart battery fire.  Keeping your cart’s batteries clean prevents this from happening. When you don’t keep the battery terminals clean, they will start to corrode.  This causes air gaps between the battery terminals and the wires that connect to them.  Sparks will fly across the gaps that the corrosion created.  If you push your cart too much with a heavy load with batteries that are not properly maintained, they are more likely to catch fire.

How to Prevent Fires

Keeping golf cart batteries in proper working condition is the key to avoiding golf cart battery-related fires. Regular maintenance should be completed, including checking cables and posts for signs of corrosion and cleaning them with a solution designed specifically for golf carts. The electrolyte level of the golf cart battery should also be checked and topped off (if necessary) with distilled water on a regular basis. Getting in the habit of regularly monitoring your golf cart battery will help you detect any signs of a problem with the charging system, its power distribution, or deteriorating batteries before it is too late. Professional golf cart technicians can check for irregularities in voltage, identify any faults that may cause a fire hazard in future, and also clean corrosion from battery terminals.

If a golf cart is stored for an extended period of time, monitor its charge at least once every month in order to make sure it isn’t overcharged or suffering from reversed polarity due to faulty wiring. Golf carts should be kept in well ventilated areas, away from combustible material, for safety reasons.
