What Does a Golf Cart Need to Be Street Legal?

To be legally operated on the roads, your cart must be equipped with headlights, taillights, turn signals, brake lights, reflex reflectors, parking brakes, rearview mirrors, seat belts, a windshield, horn, and DOT-approved tires. Your cart must also have a VIN and registration, and the driver must possess a valid driver’s license.

How Can I Make My Golf Cart Street Legal?

If your cart doesn’t already have these items, you can work with our team to order and install the parts you need to make your cart street legal. We proudly partner with Red Hawk to provide top-notch products that will keep you and your passengers safe on the roadways. If you have any questions about specific installations, give us a call today!

Where Can I Operate a Street Legal Cart?

Street legal carts are allowed to operate on roads that have a posted speed limit of 35 miles per hour or slower. Technically classified as a Low Speed Vehicle, or LSV, your cart is allowed to cross a street that has a higher posted speed limit, but you may not drive it on these streets. Golf Carts are also only allowed to be operated during the day unless they have two working headlights and two working tail lights. Wondering if you need a driver’s license to drive a golf cart on the roads? Indeed, street legal carts must be driven by someone with a valid driver’s license who is over the age of 16.

Should I Insure My Golf Cart?

Yes! This is something many golf cart owners don’t think of. Don’t wait until it’s too late; get liability insurance for your vehicle and keep it with you whenever operating the cart. This, along with your license and registration, will be needed in the event of an accident.
