How to Store a Golf Cart for the Winter

Golf carts are an easy and fun way to get around.  Whether you use your cart to get around the course, take it off road, or something else, it certainly adds a level of convenience to your routine. But what do you do with it during the off-season? Winter weather can be harsh on your golf cart, and if you don’t take the necessary steps to store it properly, you may end up with a damaged or non-functioning vehicle come spring. In this blog post, we will discuss the steps you need to take to store your golf cart for the winter and keep it in top condition.

Step 1: Clean Your Golf Cart

The first step in storing your golf cart for the winter is to give it a good cleaning. This will not only help preserve its appearance, but it will also make it easier to inspect for any damage or wear and tear that may need to be addressed by the spring. Clean the exterior of the golf cart with soap and water, and be sure to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated on the tires or undercarriage.

Step 2: Inspect Your Golf Cart

Once you have cleaned your golf cart, it’s time to inspect it for any damage or wear and tear. Look for any cracks or dents in the body, and check the tires for any punctures or worn spots. Check the battery connections and ensure that they are clean and secure. If you notice any issues, it’s best to address them now, before you put your golf cart into storage.

The next step in preparing your golf cart for winter storage is to fully charge the battery. This will ensure that the battery is in good condition when you are ready to use it again in the spring. This step is also important because if your battery is not charged, it is more likely to freeze when exposed to cold temperatures.  This can cause many issues for the battery, including causing it to be unusable in the spring.

Step 4: Store Your Golf Cart Indoors

The ideal place to store your golf cart for the winter is indoors, such as in a garage or storage shed. This will protect it from the elements, including snow, ice, and rain. It will also prevent it from being exposed to extreme temperatures, which can cause damage to the battery and other components. If you don’t have an indoor storage space, you can also use a golf cart cover to protect your vehicle from the elements.

Step 5: Disconnect the Battery

If you are storing your golf cart indoors, it’s a good idea to disconnect the battery. This will help prevent any potential drain on the battery while it is in storage, and will also reduce the risk of a fire or electrical hazard. If you are storing your golf cart with the battery connected, make sure it is stored in a cool, dry place, and check it periodically to ensure that it is not draining.

Step 6: Cover Your Golf Cart

Whether you are storing your golf cart indoors or outdoors, it’s a good idea to use a cover to protect it from dust and debris. Golf cart covers are designed to fit your vehicle perfectly and are made from materials that will protect it from the elements and other potential hazards. Make sure to choose a cover that is made from high-quality materials, and that is designed to fit your specific model of golf cart.  This way, you can ensure that your cart is as protected from the elements as possible.

Step 7: Store the Tires Properly

Finally, it’s important to store the tires of your golf cart properly during the winter. This will help prevent them from flat-spotting and will also extend their overall lifespan. You can store your golf cart with the tires inflated, or you can use a set of tire chocks to hold the tires in place. These chocks are just like tire chocks for a regular vehicle – just make sure you have the proper size chocks for your cart.

If you choose to inflate the tires, be sure to check the pressure regularly to ensure that they are still properly inflated. If you are storing your golf cart on an uneven surface, you may also want to consider using a set of tire blocks or cradles to keep the vehicle level and prevent the tires from becoming flat-spotted.
