How to Store Golf Cart Batteries for Summer

golf cart battery life

The coming of the summer season means you need to take care of golf carts. Summer is a good season for riding, but the case is different if it comes with extreme temperatures. This is because high temperatures are not ideal for cart batteries, and therefore you need to store them so that they don’t get damaged. However, how you store the battery is of the essence because it will determine the functionality of the battery after summer is gone.

Several steps are critical because they ensure the battery is in good shape the next time you want to take a ride. If you are wondering how you can store your golf battery, here is a guideline to follow.

Get A Good Place to Store Your Battery

This is the first step, and it is critical. However, where you store your battery isn’t important, but you must ensure it meets the following standards.

  • The storage space should be sealed, with an easy to manage temperature
  • It should be dim
  • Away from people
  • Accessible to electricity for charging

The above steps are simple, but they should come first before deciding on battery storage.

Charge The Golf Cart Battery

The battery needs to be fully charged before storage, and that’s why it is the second step. Once it is charged, you should turn off the key and remove it. Once the cart is off, check whether the battery connectors are clean. If you notice they aren’t, use, a piece of cloth or brush with baking soda and water to clean them.

Check The water levels.

Once you are done with the charge, the next step is to check the water levels. If they are low, you should refill the battery with water but not above the battery plates. However, you can only use distilled water to do so because the water is free from minerals which could alter the lifespan of a battery.

Disconnect

After ensuring that the battery is fully charged and the water levels are good, the next step is to disconnect the battery. The initial disconnection step is removing it from the AC, followed by disconnection from the cart. After that, disconnect the negative and positive battery connections and check out for any corrosion.

Keep Checking the Battery

A regular battery checkup is important because that’s the only way you will know if it’s in good shape. However, it doesn’t have to be done daily. The checking involves measuring the water levels to ensure they are balanced. Also, you are required to ensure the power level doesn’t go too low. Doing the checkup is not easy, and that’s why mechanics advise that you do it once a week.

Conclusion

The high summer temperatures come and go meaning you will get a chance to use your golf cart again. This is why you need to ensure that it is well stored to prevent any damage. The above discussed are the main steps on how you can store your golf cart batteries. Following each of them will guarantee a long life to your cart’s battery.
