What is a Golf Cart Solenoid?

new golf carts for sale

Owning a golf cart is a great experience and can help you make the most of your vacations, neighborhood pool parties, and golf outings! Just like a regular vehicle however, there are some components that you should be aware of so that you can keep your golf cart operating in great condition.

Before we jump into what a solenoid is and what functions it performs, our team is ready to jump into action to help you find your perfect new or used golf cart for sale! We can also help you with any service needs! (Which might be just what you need if you’re googling what a solenoid is.) Call us at 919-552-9351 or contact us online today to let us know how we can help, or read on for a description of what a solenoid is and how it works.

What Is a Solenoid?

All golf carts require a solenoid to run. In simple terms, it is the connection between your cart’s battery and the starter or traction motor. It works constantly every time you operate your golf cart, which means it can be one of the first items that will need maintenance or repair.

How Does a Solenoid Work?

When you push the pedal to accelerate in your golf cart, voltage passes through the solenoid to get you moving. There are two main components to a solenoid: a steel plunger and thin wire. The voltage will pass through the wire to the plunger, signaling it to close, which in turn lets energy flow from the battery to the motor to propel you forward.

If you hit the neighborhood streets or golf greens on a beautiful day and get your cart some great use, it could easily start and stop up to 1,500 times! That’s a lot of stop and go for your solenoid.

Does My Solenoid Need Service?

With all of the hard work your solenoid puts in every time you get behind the wheel of your golf cart, you should take care to come in for golf cart service regularly. The performance of your cart requires a high-performing solenoid, and when it stops functioning properly, you’ll notice your cart won’t start or it may not pick up speed like it used to.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Solenoid?

The cost of replacing a solenoid will vary depending on your model, but our team of golf cart experts will be happy to take a look at your cart. We can examine the solenoid and other components to make sure everything else is in great working condition, and give you an up-front and transparent service quote!
