Many individuals who own, or are looking to purchase, a golf cart find themselves asking if their vehicle’s battery could suffer damage in low temperature conditions. Put simply, the answer is yes – but having an understanding of how temperature fluctuations can impact your battery’s performance can help you keep that risk at bay. Thankfully, understanding exactly how freezing temperatures will impact your golf cart can help put these fears at ease and ensure that you get years of quality use out of your vehicle. Can Golf Cart Batteries Freeze?

Golf cart batteries freeze in colder temperatures, like any other battery. Although the exact range of temperatures at which freezing occurs can vary among battery types and brands, freezing may occur when temperatures dip below 32°F. The freeze-point of a lead-acid golf cart battery is actually lower than 32°F, but it’s important for owners to store or cover these batteries if temperatures are forecasted to drop into this range. If a battery is not properly prepared for the winter, then it is more likely to freeze during cold weather.

It’s also important to understand that a golf cart’s battery is more likely to freeze if it is uncharged or only partially charged.  A fully charged battery has a lower freezing point – as low as 80°F – but that does not mean you should not take precautions to prevent freezing.

The key takeaway here is that if you live in a particularly cold climate and plan to use your golf cart regularly throughout the winter months, be sure to utilize additional measures to protect your golf cart battery. We will discuss how to protect your golf cart and its batteries from the cold.

What Happens When a Golf Cart Battery Freezes?

When a golf cart battery freezes, the electrolyte liquid inside the cells freeze causing a build-up of pressure that weakens or damages the cells and degrades internal connections. Additionally, due to this buildup of pressure, it is not uncommon for the case and lid of a freezing golf cart battery to crack its battery case. This may result in a leak or cause the battery to completely fail. Repair may be possible in some instances if caught quickly but will still cost time and money while also leaving you without a functioning golf cart until complete.

If you see that your golf cart’s battery has frozen, you should bring it inside and allow it to thaw.  Once it has thawed, you can try to charge it.  Make sure you have the charger on its lowest charge rate setting.  Allow it to charge for an hour at a time, and then take it off the charger to rest.  Continue doing this and regularly check the voltage on the battery.  If the voltage is increasing, your battery is likely okay.  If it is not increasing, you may need a new battery for your cart.

Protecting Your Cart From Cold Weather

Cold temperatures can be tough on your golf cart, but there are some things you can do to help protect it and extend its life. The first step is to make sure the battery has been charged up and regularly maintained.  This includes making sure that they are clean of any dirt, debris, or battery acid.  You will also want to disconnect the battery cables.  This will prevent any electrical issues.

If possible, it is best to keep your golf cart in an area that is protected from the elements.  Keeping a cover over the cart at all times will help minimize the effects of the cold, as well as parking in a garage or shed overnight when possible.  Additionally, make sure your cart’s tires are properly inflated.  You may also want to drain the fuel in the cart so that it does not freeze in the cold temperatures.

Taking proactive steps will give you peace of mind knowing that you are doing all you can in order to protect your golf cart from the chill of winter.
